Archaeological Site and Museum

One of the most important objectives of the Archaeological site and Museum of Kamenica is the organization of educational activities with school children and university students, so to raise awareness of the value of archaeological heritage and to promote an understanding that the spoiling and looting of sites is damaging to the future of Albania.

The on-site activity days provide the opportunity to take part in a simulated excavation, using real tools and genuine recording techniques. For this purpose the copies of two graves have been created, equipped with plastic skeletons and copies of ceramic vessels and bronze jewellery found in the graves of the tumulus.

The schools project consists in two parts: first, Professor Skender Aliu gives an introductory lecture on principles of archaeology and prehistory in the schools themselves.

Second, classes of 20/25 people come to the site for a whole school-day, they get a guided tour of the site and the museum, then a lecture on what they are going to do, with principles of archaeological excavation and stratigraphy from Nertila, and then they experience "hands-on" the excavation and documentation of the copies of the two graves.

Besides the excavation with proper tools, they document the graves on real recording sheets, they take pictures, they seave the deposit.

Then they reconstruct the copies of complete but broken vessels, and they describe the vessels and the copies of bronze objects (bracelets and pins) that they found as grave goods.

In few words, they follow a real procedure, with a strong accent on the documentation so that they understand the difference between archaeologists and "amateurs"/looters. The program has started since the month of October, with the opening of the school year, and has been exceptionally successful. Both the students and their teachers are enthusiast, and the calendar is completely reserved.

Besides the activity of experimental excavation, the 8th grade students of the primary school “Shkolla e Re” of Korça on June 6th, 2008 have taken the initiative to organize a play representing the War between Illyrians and Roman.

This activity has been very welcome by the Museum’s staff, as a successful sign of the fruitful collaboration between the Kamenica Tumulus Centre and the schools, and of the positive feedback of the Educational Program.
